Whiskey Blending

Whiskey Aging, Blending & Finishing
Koopers Whiskey approaches whiskey production through sourcing, maturation, blending, and finishing, rather than in-house distillation. The blending process incorporates barrels of whiskey at various ages and mash bills, selected for compositional and sensory characteristics before being combined.
American Oak
tight-grained, contributing vanilla, caramel, and sweet spice
European Oak
often adds structural tannins and complex spice characteristics
Second Use Barrels
previously held wine, fortified wine, or spirits, impart deeper aromatics as finishing casks

Barrel Selection & Oak Influence

Oak barrels are a foundational element of whiskey blending. Koopers sources multiple types and styles of oak and wooden barrels.
Heat cycles
facilitate deeper movement of spirit into the wood grain
Temperature Fluctuations
accelerate extraction of oak-derived compounds
Humidity Balance
affects evaporation rates (angel’s share) and can influence concentration of flavor components

The Powerful & Moody Texas Climate

The Texas climate — characterized by high heat, broad temperature swings, and moderate humidity — plays a measurable role in whiskey maturation.

A Harmony of Flavors

We draw on an almost infinite number of flavors and aromas to compose our masterpieces. We select whiskey barrels based on flavor profiles, fragrances, and maturity. Next, we define our desired proportions by seeking complementary marriages of flavors and consistency. We then blend the chosen whiskeys in small batches before returning the mixture to select used oak casks to marry and rest, reaching even deeper layers of balance.

The outcome is intended to be technically balanced, with complementary sensory elements rather than dominance by a single note or barrel.
